Standards Make $en$e…..Certification benefits the drilling industry

January 11th, 2012 CDDA Comments off

The Canadian Diamond Drilling Association (CDDA) has developed a certification process to upgrade the image of the diamond drilling industry. “Contractor Certification will demonstrate that a drill company is a ‘peace-of-mind’ service provider and open doors to new business opportunities for certified contractors,” according to Sylvie McPhail, Superintendent of Health, Safety, Environment and Community at Bradley Bros. Ltd. “Truly a winning formula for all stakeholders,” she adds.

The CDDA has supported mining companies, drilling contractors, manufacturers and suppliers since the 1940s; the new certification initiative continues that tradition by bringing drilling contractors in synch with rest of the minerals industry, where standards are becoming the norm.

The diamond drilling industry has the highest injury rate in the mineral exploration sector, according to the 2009 Canadian Mineral Exploration Health & Safety annual report. High injury rates expose drilling contractors and their clients to legal liability and increased costs due to lost work days.

“Exploration and mining companies are going to seek out drilling contractors that meet the new standard developed by the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association because it will simplify the selection process by reducing risk associated with environmental and safety performance,”   predicts Peter Holbek, Vice President Exploration with Copper Mountain Mining Corporation.

The CDDA standard will help companies demonstrate to clients and regulators that they have a health and safety, environmental and quality management system.

There is already a waiting list of diamond drill companies that want to start the process, as the CDDA puts the finishing touches to the new standard that will roll out across the country this winter and spring.

Look for us at Roundup January 23-26 in Vancouver and PDAC March 4-7 in Toronto.  Wear a CDDA button and spread the word that Standards Make $en$e

2012 CDDA AGM and Convention Location and Dates Announced

August 15th, 2011 CDDA Comments off

The 2012 location for the AGM and Convention will be the Hotel Chateau Laurier Quebec May 9-11, 2012.  Look for information in January 2012.  Mark it on your calendars!!

Your input needed!!

June 2nd, 2011 CDDA Comments off

We have recently been contacted by a few colleges asking the following question:

Why are the postsecondary Mechanical Technician – Industrial Maintenance (Millwright) programs across Ontario colleges experiencing a significant down-turn in applications/enrolments?

The trade is not regulated. It is apprenticeable, but no licensing or compulsory work requirements for apprenticeship within the industry.

Jobs Ontario suggests that from 2009-2013 there will be average opportunities for employment in this occupation and goes on to say that new positions will open as well as many more openings stem from retirement replacements. They state “millwrights and industrial mechanics are likely to face good employment prospects…” due to their varied skills.

Everything seems to be “right” for this trade, yet colleges are not getting students applying…

Is your indsutry not in the need of these positions to be filled?  Is there something the colleges are not offering that the industry is looking for? Your input is appreciated as the colleges work to address this issue.
