Canadian Mental Health Association Mental Health Week, May 4-10, is an annual national event dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging open conversations about mental health. Each May, it invites Canadians to reflect on the importance of mental well-being and supporting one another. For the diamond drilling and exploration industry, this week carries added significance. Through the CDDA’s Bring It to the Surface initiative, we recognize that the realities of the work in our industry, remote job sites, long rotations, and time away from support systems can place unique pressures on mental health. This week serves as an important reminder that mental health is just as critical as physical safety, and that speaking up, checking in, and accessing support are signs of strength that help build a safer, more resilient industry.
This year’s CMHA Mental Health Week theme is “Come Together,” highlighting the importance of supporting one another, staying connected, and building a sense of community. This theme strongly aligns with the CDDA’s Bring It to the Surface initiative. What began as a pledge to change our industry’s mental health culture has evolved into a program that brings real, stigma-shattering engagement directly to your jobsite. This week is a reminder to “Come Together” and “Bring it to the Surface.” A simple conversation or small act of support can make a real difference in creating a culture where people feel safe, valued, and understood. By bringing mental health conversations to the surface and prioritizing mental well-being across our industry, we’re not only supporting individuals but also strengthening our workforce and helping ensure longevity in a career that is both demanding and deeply rewarding.
Stress, burnout, anxiety, and depression can affect anyone, and recognizing the signs early can make a meaningful difference. By encouraging awareness and early intervention, workplaces can help prevent challenges from escalating and foster a safer, healthier environment for everyone.
At CDDA, Mental Health Week closely aligns with the purpose of the Bring It To The Surface initiative. Through continued awareness campaigns, educational resources, and meaningful conversations, we can work towards breaking the stigma surrounding mental health in the drilling and mining industry. We hope to encourage workers and employers to prioritize mental health and support one another both on and off the job site not only this week but every week. Together, we can bring mental health conversations to the surface and make a lasting change.
