The Top 10 Health and Safety Risks in the Surface Diamond Drilling Sector were identified by workers, supervisors, and employers in a risk assessment workshop facilitated by Workplace Safety North, with the support of the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association.
Over the next weeks, we’re spotlighting one risk each week. This week’s focus: #8 Highway or off-road travel by truck or van to, from, and on, drill sites (drowsy driving).
Safe Travel to and From Drill Sites
Traveling to and from drill sites often means long hours on highways or navigating challenging off-road conditions in trucks or vans. One of the greatest risks identified in the workshop for our industry was drowsy driving. Fatigue slows reaction times, reduces focus, and increases the chance of incidents. To stay safe, drivers and crews should plan rest breaks, rotate drivers when possible, and recognize the early signs of fatigue. Prioritizing rest and alertness before hitting the road is essential to ensuring everyone arrives at the drill site and back home safely.
