For this week’s Mentor Spotlight, our Membership Services Coordinator reached out to Darryl Barendregt, Operations Manager at Driftwood Diamond Drilling Ltd.

Introduction

Darryl was born and raised in Smithers, BC, and has spent eight years working hard in Canada’s diamond drilling industry.

“As Operations Manager at Driftwood Diamond Drilling Ltd., I strive to lead with practical experience, steady decision-making, and a genuine respect for the people I work alongside. My approach is hands-on and team-focused, shaped by years in the industry and a deep appreciation for the tough work that gets the job done. I take pride in staying level-headed in demanding environments and always puts safety and integrity at the core of my work.”

Darryl’s Leadership Approach
“I don’t seek to be followed or put myself first; my goal is to work alongside Driftwood’s crew, putting in my best effort every day to help everyone succeed. I believe leadership means being present, pulling your weight, and keeping things real and respectful. No matter someone’s role or experience, I strive to show genuine respect to every member of our crew; it’s the foundation of how we work together.

When challenges come up, I focus on the solution more than the problem, trusting that with clear thinking and teamwork, we’ll find a way forward. At the end of the day, I lead by example, with steady commitment and a deep appreciation for the hard work around me.”

At the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association, safety is a top priority. With that in mind, our Membership Services Coordinator asked Darryl how he keeps safety at the forefront at Driftwood Diamond Drilling Ltd.

Driftwood Diamond Drilling Ltd. – Safety Approach
“At Driftwood Diamond Drilling Ltd., safety isn’t just a priority; it’s a core value that guides every job, every day. Our strong safety record reflects a deeply embedded culture of caution, responsibility, and care. We believe that every member of our team deserves a safe and respectful work environment, no matter the location or conditions.

I’d like to sum up our safety strategy with the Four P’s:

  1. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Proper PPE is the first line of defense. We ensure all crew members have access to high-quality gear and understand how to use it effectively—from helmets and gloves to specialized equipment for extreme conditions.
  2. Potential Hazards
Awareness is key. We consistently identify, assess, and communicate potential hazards before work begins and throughout operations. Daily safety meetings, site evaluations, and hazard reports keep everyone informed and alert.
  3. Procedures
Clear, standardized procedures ensure consistency and safety across all tasks. We train every team member to follow protocol closely, adapting as needed to the demands of remote and changing environments.
  4. Participation
Safety is a shared responsibility. Every crew member plays an active role—from reporting concerns to offering feedback and supporting one another. We encourage open dialogue and make it a point to listen and learn from those on the ground.”

“At Driftwood Diamond Drilling, safety isn’t just about checking boxes; it’s about people. Every crew member has a home, a family, and a life beyond the job, and we never lose sight of that. It’s our responsibility to create and maintain a work environment where everyone feels protected, respected, and looked out for—no matter the conditions or the location.

We recognize that the work we do can be demanding and remote, which is why our approach to safety goes beyond procedures and gear. It’s about fostering a culture of care and accountability so that when the day’s work is done, everyone walks away safely and heads home to what matters most. Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just completing the job—it’s making sure every member of the team returns safely to those waiting for them at home.”

The Canadian Diamond Drilling Association is proud to recognize Darryl for his outstanding leadership and dedication to safety in the diamond drilling industry, and we thank Driftwood Diamond Drilling Ltd. for their continued support of our Association.

We look forward to featuring more mentors who are making a lasting impact across the field. To learn more or to be considered for an upcoming Mentor Spotlight, please contact us at office@cdda.ca.
