Mentor Spotlight: Tate Byberg, TIME Limited

This week’s Mentor Spotlight features Tate Byberg, Vice-President, Sales & Marketing at TIME Limited.

Our Membership Services Coordinator connected with Tate to honour his longtime commitment to the diamond drilling industry and our association.

What Drives Your Passion for the Diamond Drilling Industry?

“Born and raised in Red Lake Ontario, there was no question I was going to end up in the mining and diamond drilling industry. Our entire family had it in our blood, grandfathers, uncles, father, myself and brother. Denis Despres initially gave me my start in the early 90’s with Morissette Diamond Drilling, at the time a division of Boart Longyear. After a couple years on the drills, Boart Longyear provided me with 15 years of various opportunities and experiences, including various roles in coring sales, percussive sales, and finally back into contracting as the Health and Safety Manager for the International Drilling Services division managed out of Canada.”

What led to your transition at TIME Limited?

“After 4 years of extended travels throughout Venezuela, Russia, and West Africa, it was time for a change. With a wife and two young children at home, I felt the need to be home for my family. That’s where Peter Henderson comes in. Peter offered me an opportunity to be closer to home and get back into product sales with TIME Limited, and it changed my life with an opportunity to become a partner.”

Can you tell us about TIME Limited and the role it plays in the diamond drilling and mining industry?

“In my 18 years with TIME, there’s been quite a bit of change within the company. With a strong team, and a lot of hard work, TIME has emerged into a competitive manufacturer and distributor of mining and diamond drilling consumables. We’ve had steady growth, focused on our manufacturing and engineering capabilities, opened multiple branches throughout Canada, and extended our offering globally through various resellers and relationships. I’m very excited for the years to come, as we will be expanding into a new state-of-the-art manufacturing and warehousing facility in the next year or two.”

What role have mentorship and leadership played in your career, and how do you approach supporting the growth of others in the industry?

“Over the last 30 plus years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have some strong mentors and leaders in my career and life. I try to instill in others what I’ve experienced and learned from the mentors in my life. Talk-the-talk, and walk-the-walk. I feel a sense of pride and reward when I see the development in others. Sharing experiences and knowledge is one thing, but instilling confidence in others and providing opportunities for their personal growth is what I feel is most important. Talk less and listen more, and be open enough to continue learning and sharing. Relationships built within this industry can be very rewarding. Whether you are learning or sharing with others, these relationships have become friendships that will last a lifetime.”

What role does the CDDA play in strengthening industry relationships?

“Associations such as the CDDA, allow for these relationships and friendships to flourish and create a much stronger industry. There are many leaders and mentors within this industry, and it’s amazing that, as big as the global mining and diamond drilling industry is, it still has a feel of a very tight-knit network.”

The Canadian Diamond Drilling Association extends our thanks to Tate for his long-standing dedication to the diamond drilling industry and to TIME Limited for their continued support of the CDDA.
