Safety Alert: Wildlife Awareness and Bear Safety on Remote Exploration Sites

  • June 8, 2026

A recent fatal bear attack at a remote uranium exploration site in northern Saskatchewan is a tragic reminder of the importance of wildlife awareness and preparedness when working in remote or wilderness areas.

According to media reports, a 27-year-old contractor was killed after encountering a black bear at a remote exploration site in northern Saskatchewan in May. Following the incident, field operations were temporarily halted while the circumstances were investigated and safety protocols were reviewed. This incident is only the fourth in the province’s recorded history. The man’s name has not been released. The provincial government issued a reminder on Friday morning , the same day as the attack, that bears were emerging from their dens and that people should take precautions. See full story here.

For the diamond drilling and mineral exploration industry, this incident highlights the need for strong wildlife safety planning before crews enter the field. Remote worksites often overlap with wildlife habitat, and workers may face increased risk when travelling between camp, drill sites, remote access points, etc.

Before beginning work in areas where bears or other wildlife may be present, employers and supervisors should ensure that crews are properly trained and prepared. Wildlife safety planning should include site-specific hazard assessments, clear reporting procedures, proper food and waste storage, designated eating areas and emergency response plans. Workers should also be reminded to remain alert, avoid travelling alone where possible, keep work areas clean, report wildlife sightings immediately, and never approach or attempt to feed wildlife.

This incident is a reminder that wildlife encounters can be a serious workplace safety hazard. The CDDA encourages all members to review their wildlife management procedures, refresh bear safety training with crews, and ensure that emergency response plans are current.

Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those affected by this tragic incident.
