Safety Tips: Beat the Heat

  • July 5, 2023

As the summer heat comes in and temperatures rise, it’s important to practice safety when working outside to stay safe and healthy. Follow these safety tips to stay cool on the job site this summer.

1. Stay hydrated: It’s essential to drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Carry a water bottle with you and take frequent sips to stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water, as this can mean you’re already dehydrated.

2. Wear protective clothing: Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing to prevent heatstroke or other heat-related illnesses. Consider wearing a hat or sun-protective clothing to help shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

3. Take frequent breaks: Working in extreme heat can cause fatigue, exhaustion, and other symptoms that can be dangerous. Take breaks often in the shade or indoors to avoid over-exertion and heat-related illnesses.

4. Apply sunscreen: Sun damage and UV exposure can lead to skin cancer, so apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30.Reapply every two hours, particularly if you’re sweating heavily.

5. Learn the symptoms of heat-related illnesses: Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, confusion, and rapid heartbeat, among others. If you experience any of these symptoms, take a break in a cool, shaded area, and seek medical help if necessary.

Working outside in the summer can be challenging and risky, but by following these tips, you can stay safe and healthy. Be sure to prioritize your own health and well-being and avoid dangerous situations that could put your health at risk.
