75th AGM & Convention Keynote Speaker: Andrew Brash

The Canadian Diamond Drilling Association is pleased to announce this years AGM & Convention Guest Speaker, Andrew Brash. Andrew Brash is a Calgary climber and teacher who has been chasing his climbing dreams for over 30 years in some of the most spectacular mountain environments in the world, including Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan, Alaska, Western China, Chile, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

In May of 2006, Brash and teammates Dan Mazur, Myles Osborne and Jangbu Sherpa made international headlines when they stopped 200 metres from the top of Mt. Everest and abandoned their summit attempt to assist Australian climber Lincoln Hall. Hall had been declared dead by his own team and left for dead, spending the night alone on the mountain above 8,600m. The events that followed helped make for a very memorable season on Mt. Everest.

In the spring of 2008, Brash returned to Everest, this time climbing on the Nepali side of the mountain after Chinese officials closed access to Tibet, due to fears of potential Olympic protests on the mountain, and event that spurred the presence of Nepali Army personnel on the mountain and a temporary closure to climbing, proving that adventure on Everest is not quite dead yet.

Andrew continues to be involved in climbing, as well as his job teaching high school social studies in Calgary and in raising his three daughters, Anna, Jaime and Alexandra. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in June, 2017 from the University of Calgary, for “services to mountaineering”.
