Mentor Spotlight: Graham Syme Hydracore Drills

This week’s Mentor Spotlight features Graham Syme, Director of Sales and Marketing at Hydracore Drills.

Our Membership Services Coordinator connected with Graham to learn what fuels his passion for the diamond drilling industry.

What Drives My Passion for the Diamond Drilling Industry?

“I was probably always destined for a career in sales. My father served in the Air Force, and we moved every three to five years; so from a young age, I was constantly meeting new people and developing the social skills that would later become foundational to my success.

In 2011, Doug Taylor from West Coast Drilling Supplies (Di-Corp) gave me my first opportunity in the diamond drilling industry and I took to it like a duck to water. Thank you, Doug.

What immediately drew me in was the people. Meeting contractors, drillers, mechanics, and support staff from all walks of life has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. The mineral exploration industry is like no other tight-knit, full of personality, and driven by a shared passion for discovery. I don’t just think of our clients as customers; I often call them friends and fans, because that’s what they become.

Fourteen years later, I’m still hooked. I currently serve as Director of Sales & Marketing at Hydracore Drills, and it’s the most fun I’ve had yet. Working with a diverse, fast-moving team of professionals who share the same passion for drilling is an amazing experience. Bringing our products to new markets, building relationships across the globe, and watching contractors succeed using our equipment, it never gets old.”

What Has Made Me Successful in Sales and Marketing?

“I believe my early years of moving frequently gave me an edge. Making new friends repeatedly taught me how to connect quickly and genuinely skills that translate directly into professional sales. But let me be clear: true sales isn’t about having the gift of the gab or telling people what they want to hear. That might win you a few short-term deals, but it won’t build trust, and trust is the foundation of everything.

What has made me successful is a genuine care for the people I serve. I don’t chase the purchase order; I chase the relationship. That means answering the phone after hours, following up consistently, and being fully invested in their success. When your friends & fans win, they’ll bring you with them.

Asking thoughtful questions and actively listening, not just waiting to talk, has been another key. Most people will tell you exactly how to earn their business if you’re paying attention. And once you’ve earned it, the real work begins ensuring smooth deliveries, solving problems as they come up, and showing up consistently.

At the end of the day, people buy from people they like and trust. If you’re passionate, honest, and genuinely committed to helping them succeed, that trust builds naturally. Lose it, and it’s almost impossible to get back.

I’d like to thank the CDDA and all my friends and fans for the support, stories, and laughs.”

The Canadian Diamond Drilling Association is proud to recognize Graham for his ongoing support of our Association and the industry and we highlight Hydracore Drills as a valued new Supplier Member.

We look forward to showcasing more mentors who are making a lasting impact in our industry. To learn more or to be considered for an upcoming Mentor Spotlight, please contact us at office@cdda.ca.
